Epicenter

In this painting, I sought to bridge the gap between my coloured-pencil drawings and my painting practice. Working on a wooden panel allowed me to draw directly onto the surface, while pushing its materiality further through paint, texture and found objects.

During a trip to the Brazilian coast, I came across a piece of dried fish skin with its scales still intact. Although it belonged to a dead animal, there was something beautiful about finding it within the habitat it had once inhabited. Incorporated into the painting, it evokes the depths of the sea as the epicentre of a silent yet overwhelming transformation—where death and life are not opposites, but parts of the same cycle.
