Before the Surface

The painting began to resemble a landscape, but one in which the boundary between the surface and everything beneath it had disappeared. Its internal layers remain visible, as though the earth had opened to reveal the movements, pressures and transformations that shaped it.

I became interested in the idea that every landscape contains its own history. What appears still and complete is the result of forces that began long before it became visible: tectonic plates shifting, layers accumulating and matter continually changing form. The landscape is not only what we see, but everything it carries beneath its surface.
